Major power outage in windy Auckland, New Zealand

Power Outages Alert
Nearly 1500 Auckland homes went without power on Sunday morning.

The outage impacted residents around Clevedon from 10:50am; Vector confirmed power was restored by 12:45pm.

The cause of the outage was not known, but strong winds in Auckland could have been to blame; they have already blown a tree into Papatoetoe telephone lines on Dennis Rd.

A fire service spokeswoman said they were not aware of the Clevedon outage but that Chorus had been advised about the Papatoetoe tree.

It was not thought the tree had severed communications as it was “just resting on the lines”, she said.

Meanwhile a smaller power outage in Titirangi affected 30 homes.

Flood Alerts Issued As More Torrential Rain Set To Hit SE/London

Severe Flood Warning
Flooding is expected to hit parts of south-east London tonight as torrential rain continues to hammer the capital.

Flood alerts have been issued for Lewisham, Bromley, Greenwich and Croydon after heavy downpours from Storm Angus caused the River Ravensbourne’s tide to rise sharply.

The Environment Agency said a second bout of torrential rain forecast from 9pm tonight could force the river to burst its banks.

The “be prepared” warnings are expected to remain in place overnight until Monday morning.

A statement on the Environment Agency’s website said: “Heavy rain has fallen overnight and we have seen the Ravensbourne rise quickly this morning.

“Sunday will be mostly dry but further heavy rain is expected from 9pm this evening.

“Further flooding is possible over Sunday night and into Monday morning.

“At this time we do not expect property flooding.

“Our staff will clear river screens today and we will continue to monitor the situation.

“The outlook will continue to be unsettled however less intense rainfall is predicted for Tuesday and Wednesday.”

The Met Office said the weather would remain dry through Sunday before heavy rain sweeps across London and the south-east throughout the evening.

Winds of 80mph were recorded at Langdon Bay on the Kent coast on Sunday morning and a gust swept in to Guernsey at 84mph.
