Staff from the National Forestry and Wildlife Service (Serfor) Piura recorded the deaths of some 31 sea lions, 41 birds and two turtles on the beaches of the province of Talara.

The members of Serfor toured the beaches talareñas from El Amor, in the district of Máncora, to the beach Peña Negra, in the district of El Alto. And according to the monitoring, 80% of the wolves show an advanced state of decomposition.

Also, about one of these dead mammals was identified, to a dozen lifeless crabs; which makes them presume that they died because of the consumption of the poisoned chusco wolf.

Juan Otivo, responsible for Serfor Piura, reported that he coordinates with local governments to proceed with the burial of wildlife specimens, as well as a meeting with the representatives of the Artisanal Fishing Lands located in the affected areas.

Otivo Meza said that “it is a recurrent theme for this time the death of marine fauna. There are versions such as poisoning by some bad fishermen, and another as a result of the change in temperature of the sea.

Hundreds, possibly thousands of cattle dead from storm in Texas, USA

Texas agricultural officials fear thousands of cattle may have died in the aftermath of Harvey, resulting in losses to ranchers of tens of millions of dollars.

With more than 1.2 million head, the counties affected by Harvey are home to 1 in 4 of all beef cows in Texas, the nation’s largest producer.

Officials are still tallying the damages, but one report said that 250 cows were found in a pile after being washed down the Colorado River. Others found alive are often hungry, thirsty and worn out.

“We’re finding cattle in waist-deep water,” said Sid Miller, Texas Agriculture commissioner. “But when we try to drive them to dry ground, many of them just collapse, they’re so exhausted.”

For those that do survive the rescue, standing in water for days can cause stress or illness.

Dr. Dan Posey, a veterinarian and clinical professor with the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, said cattle standing in water will have weakened skin and hooves that are susceptible to infection. And the stresses of prolonged standing, lack of food and no drinkable water could make the cattle susceptible to respiratory disease.

“Not all of them will recover even though they were rescued,” Posey said.

Thousands of fish dead due to pollution in the River Seiche, France

The Rennes prosecutor opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the pollution that caused the death of thousands of fish in the river Seiche, from Essé to Amanlis, in Ille-et-Vilaine.

A judicial inquiry is underway concerning the pollution of the Seiche. This summer, in August, the river was contaminated with lactose residue following an incident on a production line at the Lactalis plant in Retiers, Ille-et-Vilaine. The pollution caused the death of thousands of fish over 8 km, from Essé to Amanlis.
How was the situation handled by the factory?
Following the complaint lodged by the Federation of Ille-et-Vilaine for the fishing and protection of the aquatic environment, an investigation was entrusted to the gendarmerie company of Vitré. “It has a dual purpose: to determine the circumstances of the pollution, and to know how the situation was managed by the factory managers, and how quickly the alert was given to the authorities,” said Nicolas Jacquet, the prosecutor of Rennes.
The gendarmes investigate
The investigation will indicate whether one or more offenses are committed. “The gendarmes of Vitré work in collaboration with the services of the prefecture in charge of classified installations and the protection of the environment,” details the magistrate.
No species survived
Findings were made at plant facilities. Hearings of company officials should follow.
