Hundreds of dead fish found in river Ave in Barco, Portugal
The Taipas Volunteer Firefighters in Guimarães withdrew at the end of Thursday afternoon “hundreds and hundreds” of dead fish from a tributary of the river Ave, in the parish of Barco, said the source of the corporation Lusa.
According to this source, the operatives were called to the site by the Municipal Council of Guimarães, Braga district, after it was “alerted to the existence of a heap of fish” on the spot.
The fish “began to appear dead in the morning, but the situation worsened during the day, as the local residents said,” another source at the corporation told Lusa.
The cause for the deaths of the animals is now being investigated by the GNP Guimarães Nature and Environmental Protection Service (SEPNA), to which the firefighters delivered “some of the fish for analysis”.
