Deadly #Floods and #Landslides After 250mm of #Rain in 12 Hours in #Italy

Heavy rain in northern Italy has caused floods and landslides in the regions of Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria.

Italy’s fire department, Fire Department, said they carried out 900 operations across the north in response to severe weather, including 226 in the provinces of Milan, 220 in Alessandria, 110 in Pavia, 110 in Lodi and 110 in Genoa.

Rail and road traffic has been severely disrupted across the 3 regions. Many schools are also closed in Liguria and Piedmont.

The province of Alexandria in Piedmont is among the worst hit areas. Piedmont Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (ARPA) reported that on 22 October, 2019 as much as 253mm of rain fell in 12 hours in Casaleggio Boiro.

The Bormida river in Alexandria jumped from 1.2 meters on 20 October to around 7.5 meters on 22 October, above the danger mark of 7 meters. The Orba river in Casal Cermelli has also exceeded the danger mark 4.5m, reaching 5.78 meters on 22 October.

Italy’s Department of Civil Protection said that around 130 people have been evacuated in the Alexandria area.

News agency ANSA reported that one man has died after his vehicle was swept away by flood waters in the Serravalle area of ​​Alessandria. Another man in Turin after a road accident blamed on the severe weather.

Their family house in fire was partially destroyed their house in Campo Ligure. ARPA Liguria said 114mm of rain fell in just 1 hour in Campo Ligure on 22 October.

Rain the previous day caused some urban flooding in Milan and Genoa. ARPA Liguria said that 117.8mm of rain fell in Genoa Pegli (Genoa) in 6 hours on 21 October.

Deadly #Floods in Central Provinces, #Vietnam

Disaster management authorities in Vietnam report flooding in central areas of the country after severe weather including strong winds, lightning and heavy rain from around 15 October, 2019.

Flooding affected the provinces of Nghệ An, Bình Định and Hà Tĩnh provinces. Three fatalities were reported in Nghệ An, where 5 houses were destroyed and 5,250 houses damaged by flood water. Wide areas of crops and aquatic farms have been damaged in the province. The heavy rain also triggered landslides which blocked important roads in several areas.

The fourth fatality was reported in Bình Định. Meanwhile in Hà Tĩnh Province, crops were damaged and schools closed in several districts.

Hà Tĩnh recorded 133 mm of rain in a 24 hour period to 15 October and 168mm in 24 hours to 16 October, 2019.

Flash #Floods Hit #Gaziantep, #Turkey

Heavy rain in southern Turkey caused flash flooding in areas around the city of Gaziantep on 20 October, 2019.

Local media said dozens of people were evacuated from flooded homes or rescued from vehicles trapped in flood water.

Videos shared on Social Media showed vehicles being dragged through city streets by the flood water. Provincial disaster management agency, AFAD Gaziantep, assisted in rescuing stranded drivers.

Flooding came after a short burst of torrential rain. Gaziantep Metropolitan Mayor Fatma Sahin said in a statement that 20 to 50mm of rain fell in a 15 minute period.

Thousands Displaced by #Flooding #Rivers in the #CentralAfricanRepublic

African Republic Floods 23.10.2019

Thousands of people have been displaced and dozens of homes destroyed after rivers overflowed in the Central African Republic.

Over 6,000 people have been displaced by flooding in the capital, Bangui. Local media reported that the Ubangi (Oubangui) river broke its banks last week after a period of heavy rain.

The overflowing river flooded areas in the southwest of the city close to the river’s banks. Further heavy rain from around 20 October has worsened the situation and authorities now fear an outbreak of water borne diseases in flooded areas of the city.

Hundreds of houses have been damaged or completely destroyed. News reports said the neighbourhood of M’poko has seen the worst of the flooding, which has left around 60 houses destroyed.

Flooding has also affected other areas of the county. Radio Ndekeluka said the overflowing Ubangi river had also flooded areas of Kouango, about 170km northwest of Bangui situated in Ouaka prefecture. Over 20 homes were destroyed after flooding in Mobaye, also on the banks of the Ubangi river, in the neighbouring prefecture of Basse-Kotto.

Flooding was also reported in Bouca in Ouham prefecture and in Bambari, Ouaka prefecture, where the Ouaka River broke its banks destroying around 10 home.

At least 1 person died and almost 300 homes were severely damaged or destroyed as a result of flooding in the north west of the country in late August, 2019.
