Incessant rain triggering floods and landslides continued to wreak havoc in the northern province of Quang Ninh for the third day, killing at least 10 people and leaving two others missing and another nine injured.
Rescuing works have been maintained at a site in Ha Long Town, where three houses were buried in a landslide on Sunday night with 10 people inside.
Rescue workers have saved a man and retrieved the bodies of his wife and daughter.
The 37-year-old man was rushed to a hospital for treatment of multiple injuries, including serious brain injury.
By late Tuesday, five bodies were found while rescuers continued searching for the two others.
A local resident said that she was not aware of the landslide due to heavy rain with lightning at night.
“At around 5 a.m. [on Monday], I went out to find that the three nearby houses had been buried in the landslide. We rushed to there and later found an unconscious man and the body of his daughter,” she said.
Earlier, a mother and her two daughters in Cam Pha Town died after their house was flooded.
Landslides also killed a 74-year-old man in Cam Pha on Tuesday and injured nine others, who are under treatment at the Quang Ninh General Hospital.
Rain began to fall in the area at around 4 p.m. on Sunday (July 26). Many areas in Quang Ninh have been submerged in up to 4m of water in the province’s worst inundation.
By late Tuesday, many streets were still flooded while more than 1,500 tourists have been have been stranded on Co To Island after all boats were suspended.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has instructed the National Searching and Rescuing Commission, police, military forces and relevant agencies to step up rescuing works in Quang Ninh.
He also shared condolences to the families of the victims.
Quang Ninh People’s Committee also disbursed VND15 billion ($689,500) for relief.
Many trucks have been stuck near the Hoanh Mo and Binh Lieu border gates that were closed to inundation.
Families near the Long Dinh reservoir in Van Don District have been evacuated to safe places after part of the dam collapsed.
“If heavy rain continues, the whole dam may collapse. We have been unable to fix the collapsed section in the rain,” said Mac Thanh Luan, chairman of Van Don People’s Committee.
Soldiers of the Naval High Command’s Brigade 147 have been mobilized for rescuing and evacuation works.
Vu Thi Thoa of Cam Pha Town said electricity in the area has been cut since late Monday and her family had to eat instant noodle. “The area is inundated all around. All shops were closed.”

Long said the Military Zone 3 have mobilized soldiers and vehicles to the area to help with evacuation and rescuing.
Meanwhile, the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Center forecasted that the low pressure area will trigger rains widely in northern provinces with high threats of floods and landslides.
