Two of Mexico’s most active volcanoes are erupting, sending a spectacular mix of ash, smoke, and gas thousands of meters into the sky.

The Colima Volcano, nicknamed the Fire Volcano and located in southwest Mexico, has been shooting ash and smoke over 2,000 meters up,

It has been active since July, covering local villages in ash and dust.

Authorities have put into action an emergency evacuation plan and are monitoring the volcano’s activity.

The Colima volcano has erupted about 40 times since the 16th century.

About 500 kilometers away, the Popocatepetl Volcano, known as El Popo, is also active, sending gas and vapour into the sky.

During these latest eruptions, the volcano has shown 12 exhalations.

It was dormant for half a century, before an eruption in 1994.

Popocatepetl Volcano in Mexico explodes with ash disrupting plane flights

Volcano Alert

Volcanic ash rained down on the runway of an airport in central Mexico, forcing it to close for several hours on Wednesday and disrupting domestic flights and those to the US.

The Popocatepetl volcano began rumbling and exploding late Tuesday, spewing a four-kilometer (2.5-mile) high column of ash and ejecting white hot rock as far as 700 meters from its crater, according to the National Disaster Prevention Center.

The ash reached the city of Puebla and seven nearby towns, and the wind could blow it over the eastern state of Veracruz and Tabasco state in the south, the center said.

The airport in Puebla shut down for five hours as crews cleaned up the dusty tarmac, said state civil protection chief Jesus Morales.

The temporary closure of the small Hermanos Serdan airport affected 120 passengers whose flights to Houston, Texas, and the Mexican cities of Monterrey and Guadalajara resumed after delays.

The Mexican capital is only 55 kilometers from the snow-capped volcano, which regularly exhales massive ash clouds.

The Colima volcano in the west of the country has also been sending ash skywards in recent weeks.

Popocatepetl volcano explosions spews steam, gas and ashes about 2.1 miles into the air in Mexico

Authorities say the Popocatepetl volcano located just southeast of Mexico City has registered an explosion that spewed a mix of steam, gas and ashes about 3.5 kilometers (2.1 miles) into the air.

Mexico’s National Center for Disaster Prevention says that the flare up occurred on Friday afternoon and that the amount of ash mix released was “moderate.”

Popocatepetl is an active volcano, and the second tallest volcano in the country. It is located 72 kilometers (nearly 45 miles) from the capital, and close to Morelos, Puebla and Mexico states.
